The Three Speed Modes
Every STACYC eDRIVE ships in Red (Training) mode by factory default. Adults set the mode before each ride.
Red
Training Mode
The starting point for every new rider. Red mode limits power to a walking pace, giving kids time to learn throttle control, balance, and braking before speed is introduced.
Use Red mode until your child can consistently modulate the throttle, lift their feet onto the platforms, and use the brake to stop.
Slow: Walking Speed
Yellow
Standard Mode
The mode most riders will spend the most time in. Yellow increases power to a faster walking or slow running pace. Good for riders who have mastered Red and are building confidence.
According to STACYC, the majority of riders find Yellow to be the right speed for most riding situations.
Medium: Running Speed
Green
Advanced Mode
Full power, for advanced and older riders only. Green unlocks the bike's top speed and is intended for kids who have fully mastered both Yellow mode and confident braking.
STACYC recommends Green mode only for experienced riders who are comfortable at higher speeds in open areas.
Fast: Top Speed
Top Speeds by Model
These are theoretical top speeds at full throttle in Green mode on flat asphalt with no rider load, per STACYC.
| Model | Wheel | Battery | Red Max | Yellow Max | Green Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12eDRIVE | 12" | 18V | Walking pace | Running pace | ~9 mph |
| 16eDRIVE | 16" | 18V | Walking pace | Running pace | ~11 mph |
| 18eDRIVE | 18" | 36V | Walking pace | Running pace | ~18 mph |
| 20eDRIVE | 20" | 36V | Walking pace | Running pace | ~20 mph |
Note on 36V models: The 18eDRIVE and 20eDRIVE run on 36V motors and have significantly higher top speeds in Green mode than the 18V models. Exercise extra caution before moving a child to Green mode on these bikes.
How to Change the Mode
This process takes about 10 seconds. Adults only, per STACYC's official guidelines.
1
Start with the throttle at full
Grip the throttle and hold it at full rotation before powering the bike on. This is the entry point to programming mode.
2
Power the bike on
With the throttle held at full, press the power button to turn the bike on. The LED lights will flash five times and beep five times. Once complete, all three lights will illuminate briefly to confirm the bike is in programming mode.
3
Release the throttle, then slowly roll it forward
Release the throttle to zero, then slowly roll it forward. As the throttle moves through its range, the LEDs will cycle: Red first, then Yellow, then Green. Stop when the light for the mode you want is illuminated.
4
Hold the throttle and wait for two beeps
Once your desired mode LED is lit, hold the throttle steady at that position for approximately five seconds. You will hear two short beeps confirming the mode has been saved. Release the throttle.
5
Confirm the mode on startup
Power the bike off and back on. When it starts, the LED will show the currently saved mode: Red, Yellow, or Green. The bike remembers the last set mode between rides, so you only need to change it when you want a different setting.
Important
Adults Only
STACYC's official guidelines state that speed mode changes are to be performed by adults only. Do not show children how to enter programming mode or adjust the settings. The mode should be set before the child gets on the bike, in a controlled situation.
When to Move Up a Mode
Use these checkpoints as your guide before changing modes.
Red to Yellow
- Child throttles smoothly without jerking
- Feet come up onto platforms without hesitation
- Brake is used to slow down, not just feet
- Comfortable turning left and right
- Can stop in a controlled way when asked
Yellow to Green
- Fully confident at Yellow speed in all situations
- Braking is consistent and reliable
- Comfortable on varied terrain, not just flat pavement
- Rider is older and physically able to handle higher speeds
- Adult supervision available at all times in Green
No rush to advance. STACYC's own FAQ notes that the majority of riders find Yellow mode adequate for most riding. Moving to Green before a child is ready creates a safety risk. When in doubt, stay in Yellow.

Speed Mode FAQ
Common questions from STACYC parents
Yes. The STACYC saves the last selected mode. When you power the bike on, the LED indicator shows the currently saved mode: Red, Yellow, or Green. You only need to go through the programming process when you want to change it.
All STACYC eDRIVE models ship with Red (Training) mode as the factory default. This is the slowest setting and is intentional: STACYC recommends every new rider start in Red mode regardless of age or prior riding experience.
STACYC's official guidelines state that mode changes are for adults only. The process requires holding the throttle at full before powering on, which STACYC specifically advises against showing children. Set the mode before your child gets on the bike.
The three mode names (Red, Yellow, Green) are the same across all models, but the actual speeds are very different. The 18V 12eDRIVE and 16eDRIVE top out around 9 and 11 mph in Green mode. The 36V 18eDRIVE and 20eDRIVE reach 18 and 20 mph in Green mode. Be especially thoughtful about advancing to Green on the larger models.
The most common issue is not holding the throttle at full before powering on. The programming sequence requires the throttle to be at full rotation when the power button is pressed. If the five-flash, five-beep sequence does not occur, power off and try again with the throttle fully held. Contact AOMC or STACYC support if the issue persists.
